Throw My Ball
1 comments
…
If you have a dog, you know the ball I mean. What once was a bright yellow tennis ball is now completely full of mud and covered with potato bugs. As she chews on it, the combination of mud and air that dribbles out past her lips is making the squishy squeak noise. That very instant God chose to speak. Put down the book. If you love me, throw the ball. He then began to show me a revelation of Himself through the slobbery, intense attention of my dog upon that ball, the dog’s “work” if you will.

Blogging out of character
4 comments
As I get ready to wrap up month 4 of this newly focused blog, one thing becomes clear to me: I simply do not have it in me to maintain this at the level I had hoped I would. At least not right now at this point in my life.
I believe I have some insights that can contribute to others’ lives, but not necessarily once a week or more. Not often enough to devote a whole blog to those insights.
I started (re-started?) this blog because I felt my old site was too scattered… blogging, poetry, 3d art… all mostly unrelated to one another. So I thought I would separate them. Plus, I wanted people to read what I had to say! And all the blogging wisdom out there says you have to focus to draw readers.
Well, the truth is, I’m not a “niche” kind of person. While I have the ability to focus on one thing at a time, anyone who knows me would NOT describe me as a focused person.

Life Balance - Balance in Motion
0 comments

I am finding that the search for balance in my life is more like balancing a checkbook than balancing a scale. More like balancing my body than balancing an equation.
When I’m bogged down and find myself “too busy”, my brain reverts to a 2-dimensional reasoning scheme. I become reactive. Instead of informed decisions, I play to my emotions. I do things simply because I haven’t done them in awhile. Or because I feel guilty. Or because I’m bored with what I’m currently doing. Or because someone sent me the link.

Preparing for the Holidays
7 comments
I don’t know about you, but at the start of a new year, I’m usually pretty shell shocked from the end of the previous.
Last week, the phrase I heard repeated most often was “It’s too early for Christmas music. It’s not even Halloween yet!”
I’m guessing the next few weeks will be filled with exclamations of “It’s too early for Christmas music. It’s not even Thanksgiving yet!”
I totally agree. Take these holidays as they come. Don’t jump the gun. We’re busy enough as it is. We don’t have time to juggle multiple holidays at once.
On the other hand, this time of year seems so filled with holidays. One after another and before we know it they’ve all come and gone. Halloween, thanksgiving, advent, Christmas, new years day. It makes sense to prepare in advance.

Don't point that at me, it's got a nail in it!

You know that saying about how when you point your finger at someone, your other fingers are all pointing back at you? With me it’s been more like those fingers have been slowly drumming at my forehead like medieval water torture that after months of pounding has FINALLY brought out the truth.

Round Man, Square Church - Part 3
0 comments
Welcome to the final post of 3. If you haven’t already, please catch up with the first 2 posts, starting with PART 1.
First, let me say that I am not ending the series due to running out of things to complain about. As I sit to write this entry, I realize I will NEVER run out of things to complain about.
I am ending the series here because in writing it, I realize that all I’m doing is trying to justify my lack of patience… my lack of mercy… my lack of forgiveness and my inability to solve the problems on my own.

If all seek to be poor, none will be

With the United States in the middle of an economic downturn, it seems only fitting that this year, Blog Action Day would focus on the topic of poverty.
Looking around at a great need and the efforts of so many to combat that need, I have to wonder what my voice can lend to the conversation. What do I know about poverty?

Psalm 131 through the eyes of my daughter Zoe

I’ve read Psalm 131 before, but not since Zoe was born. Contemplating its words on a recent prayer retreat, the life of our daughter shed new and powerful light on these words from the Old Testament of the Bible…

Who am I? Here I am!
I don’t know about you, but I find that I dwell a lot on the question of “who am I?” Who am I in my career, who am I to my church, who am I as a husband, who am I as a father, who am I going to be in 10 years…
For a long time, I’ve thought that the way to be a better person is through lots of self reflection. Through constantly asking myself these “who am I” questions. That somehow through this reflection, I will find my true identity and make my place in this world.
But the more I think about it and the more I read the Bible, and the more I engage in this self-reflection, I find that maybe the deeper I look inside, the more lost I get. That maybe I wasn’t made for this world, so time spent seeking to find a place in it is time wasted.
