Bear good fruit

The grapes of wrath, spitting raspberries, people going bananas, sour lemon faces. So often, this is the “fruit” I see growing on pews Sunday morning, going out in emails, being expressed on committees, reflected in the driving of cars with “my boss is a jewish carpenter” bumper stickers, and all too often in my own heart.

Something tells me this isn’t what Christ meant when he said, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit — fruit that will last.”

There has been a lot of preaching at my church lately about “fruit” and “vines”. However, this preaching has not really defined what this “fruit” is. And I think it needs to. I think the fruit Jesus appointed Christians to bear and the fruit they talk about on Sunday may not be the same fruit.

Celebrate: employment, winnings, participation, a daughter's love and Tom Cruise

I hesitate to write this post.

When I re-launched this blog 2 months ago, I had a number of goals in mind. Top of that list was to write entries that were worth reading and that would hopefully promote some conversation.

I also had some anti-goals. This blog used to be more of a diary of my days. And lets be honest here… my life isn’t exciting enough to justify a whole blog devoted to it. With that in mind, while I want to share my thoughts, posts dedicated to “events” in my life will be intentionally avoided unless I can draw some kind of universal meaning from it.

And yet, this post is going to be entirely about the events of the past week and especially this past Wednesday. And here’s why…
