I am finding that the search for balance in my life is more like balancing a checkbook than balancing a scale. More like balancing my body than balancing an equation.
When I’m bogged down and find myself “too busy”, my brain reverts to a 2-dimensional reasoning scheme. I become reactive. Instead of informed decisions, I play to my emotions. I do things simply because I haven’t done them in awhile. Or because I feel guilty. Or because I’m bored with what I’m currently doing. Or because someone sent me the link.
Life Balance is Not 2-Dimensional
It feels like I’m constantly running back and forth to “balance the scale”. Like I’m trying to get all parts of my life to be equal. And while that certainly is one kind of balance, maintaining it is simply exhausting.
The balance I’m seeking in my life is like that of an accountant. Not an attempt to make all things equal. But the accumulation of knowledge into how things stand at a given moment so that I can make wise decisions.
I may be surprised at the cost of gas, but not surprised that I spent the money.
Life Balance is Balance in Motion
The balance I’m seeking in my life is like that of an acrobat. Balance in motion. Not the rigid balance of equal parts, but the fluid balance that comes from knowing my body, knowing my own life, and what it is doing. It is presence. It is timing. It is trusting in my body AND the safety net.
I don’t want to be surprised that I am leaning and then overreact by jerking back the other way. I want to know how far I can lean and then decide which direction. What can I shift in one direction in order to allow me to lean even further in another?
Finding Life Balance
This type of balance might not be as exhausting, but it is still really difficult. Difficult because it means giving up things in this life that I enjoy. It means making tough decisions. It means consciously letting go. It means taking responsibility. It means evaluating myself, my time, my life. It means simplifying.
Have you found this type of balance? How did you do it? How do you maintain it? What tools have helped? I’m really digging the “Getting Things Done” method and it contributes greatly to my success… when I stick to it. But I really want to know what else is working for others.
Please feel free to...
